Houston is the fastest-growing metropolitan area in the U.S., according to recent Census Bureau data. The Census Bureau’s July 2016 population estimates for 382 metros and 3,142 counties was further analyzed by American City Business Journals, the parent company of the Houston Business Journal. Here are the highlights!

County Population Growth in Texas

From April 2010 to July 2016, Harris County’s population grew by 12.1%. The weekly population growth for Harris County is calculated at 1,522.9 persons.

During the same period, Dallas County’s population grew by 8.8%. The weekly population growth rate for Dallas County is calculated at 638.7 persons.

Also during same period, Travis County’s population grew by 17.1%. The weekly population growth rate for Travis County is calculated at 536.1 persons.

Let’s look a little closer at where population growth rates are the strongest!

Metro Population Growth in Texas

From April 2010 to July 2016, the residential population of Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land increased 14.4%, from 5.92 million to an estimated 6.77 million. This translates to a net increase of 2,612.3 persons per week, which puts Houston at the top of U.S. metro population growth.

During the same period, the population of Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington increased 12.6% from 6,426,241 to 7,233,323. The net increase in population is 2,474.6 persons per week.

Meanwhile, the population of Austin-Round Rock increased 19.8% from 1,716,320 to 2,056,405. The net increase in population is 1,042.7 persons per week.

It’s reasonable to say that home demand in Houston is likely to sustain momentum, given the rates of population growth! And with improving economic forecasts for the Houston energy sector, employment growth is likely to draw new residents to the area.
