When it comes to your Houston home, what do you prefer, modern or traditional style? Modern architecture is beginning to take the Houston real estate market by storm, along with the rest of the country. Buyers tend to lean more toward buying a modern, contemporary home. The KW Energy Corridor Team is here fill you in on what this means.

What is a modern home? Modern architecture usually contains simplicity, open spaces, clean sharp lines and integration with the world around you. It emphasizes large windows, open floor plans, great views from the windows, the ability to handle the newest technology, sleek features and much more.

However, not everyone loves how industrial modern homes can look, with their aluminum, steel and glass appearance. Therefore, as Biz Journal reported, there is also a growing market for homes that blend contemporary with traditional. These homes have the open floor plans, large windows and modern interior features, but they also may showcase polished concrete or stone on the exterior, and wooden cabinets, floors and beams inside, creating a warmer and cozier ambiance.

If your Houston home features an older, more traditional floor plan, there isn’t much you can do about that without a major overhaul. But there are changes you can make to give your home a more modern appeal to buyers. Here are a few ideas:

  • Paint. Fresh coats of paint make your home look newer, fresher and more modern, if you choose the right colors. Opt for earthy, neutral colors, but switch it up. Consider accenting a wall or two with a darker, bolder color. This is a modern approach to adding color, but not too much.
  • Decorate the walls. Add contemporary art and sleek mirrors to your home décor. These will both give your Houston home a more modern look, and mirrors can help give the illusion of your rooms being bigger and more open and airy.
  • Upgrade the kitchen. This is a great place to start when upgrading features inside your Houston home. Modern kitchens tend to look sleek and clean. Consider brushed metal appliances, industrial tones, smooth countertops, and modern lights, faucet and cabinet door fixtures.

Other ways you can upgrade the style of your home are to replace old carpeting with hardwood flooring, replace outdated window treatments with newer options, add crown molding accents, upgrade your outdoor space and so on. There are many ways to make your older home appear newer!

What do you prefer, a modern home design, or a more traditional one? Share in the comments! We’d love to hear from you about your preferences.
