A recent study placed Houston in the Top 5 Cities for Young Families in 2016, out of 156 U.S. metros. The study, published by ValuePenquin, is based on 16 elements, including unemployment rates, the cost of buying a home or renting, school quality, weather and recreation. The researchers included a variety of other economic considerations and quality of life factors when judging each city.

Austin and Houston claimed the #1 and #2 spots, respectively. The top five cities are rounded out by Raleigh, N.C.; Des Moines, Iowa; and Dallas.

Houston scored particularly well in the following categories:

  • Affordable cost of living for working parents
  • Better-than-average affordability for buying or renting a home
  • Lower property taxes than national average
  • Quality and accessibility of education
  • Recreational activities/outdoor recreation
